Am I the only person out there who is obsessed with Walla Walla sweet onions? They’re perfect on their own – sliced on a grilled burger or diced in a summer salad, but I also really love them as Crispy Fried Onion Rings! Don’t let this recipe intimidate you, it’s really simple to make. And if your local store doesn’t carry Walla Walla onions, that’s not a big deal – it works great with any yellow or sweet onions. I promise you these are way better than any onion rings you can order at a restaurant. Serve with ketchup, ranch, barbecue, or your favorite dipping sauce and Enjoy!!
1 large onion, sliced into very thin rings ( ¼” or smaller)
2 c buttermilk
1 ½ cups flour
2 teaspoons Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Place buttermilk in a gallon sized ziplock bag, add onions, and let marinate for 1-4 hours in the refrigerator.
Place flour, seasoned salt, and kosher salt in a second large ziplock bag and toss until combined. Remove onions from buttermilk, letting excess buttermilk drain off. Put onion rings into ziplock bag with the flour mixture and toss making sure that each onion ring is well coated with flour. Let rest in the baggie while the oil preheats. Preheat canola oil to 350 F (176 C). Using hands, remove half of the onions from flour mixture, shaking off excess flour. Using tongs, drop onions into preheated oil and fry until onions are golden brown, flipping halfway (2-3 minutes). Remove and drain on a paper towel lined platter. Repeat with the remaining onions. Season with salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste. Serve with favorite dipping sauce.
